Peatlands




In a peatland, new plants grow faster than old plants can decay. The partially decomposed plant material that accumulates is is known as peat. It becomes quite abundant over time, and is where a peatland gets its name.

Even if you've never heard of a peatland, you've probably heard of a bog. A bog is apeatland that only recieves water from rain. This is why water in a bog quite acidic, and this usually causes and abundance of Sphangum Moss.

Peatlands are more common in northern areas. The Red Lake Peatlands, and the Hudson Bay Lowlands are examples of peatlands. Peatlands are abundant in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and Western Syberia.
